Introduction

Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva is a DOCG denomination from the Marche region, recognized in 2010, representing the premium tier of the Verdicchio di Matelica DOC. While the better-known Castelli di Jesi zone produces far larger volumes, many wine experts consider Matelica's Verdicchio to be potentially superior in quality due to the smaller zone's unique continental microclimate and higher-altitude vineyards. The Matelica zone produces a distinctly different style of Verdicchio: more structured, more mineral, with higher natural acidity and greater aging potential than the coastal Castelli di Jesi version. The Riserva DOCG designation identifies wines that have undergone mandatory aging to develop additional complexity and represent the finest expression of Verdicchio in this inland, mountain-influenced zone.

Production Area

The Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva DOCG production zone covers the area around the town of Matelica in the province of Macerata, and extends into a small part of the province of Ancona, in the central Marche region. The zone is situated in an enclosed mountain valley in the Apennines, drained by the Esino river, at elevations between 300 and 700 meters above sea level. This positioning in an inland mountain valley, rather than on the coastal hills like Castelli di Jesi, gives the zone a markedly different climate: more continental, with greater temperature extremes and significant diurnal temperature variation. The production area is considerably smaller than the Castelli di Jesi zone, contributing to the relative scarcity of Matelica Verdicchio.

Grapes Allowed

Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva DOCG must be produced from Verdicchio, which must represent at least 85 percent of the blend. Other authorized white grape varieties may comprise up to 15 percent. The Verdicchio grape grown in the Matelica valley expresses itself differently from the same variety in the Castelli di Jesi zone: the higher altitude, more continental climate, and different soil composition of the Matelica area produce grapes with higher natural acidity, greater phenolic structure, and a different aromatic profile. Matelica Verdicchio tends to be more austere in youth, less immediately aromatic, but with greater complexity and aging potential. The two zones thus represent distinct expressions of the same variety, both of high quality but stylistically different.

Production Techniques

Verdicchio grapes for Matelica Riserva are harvested in September or October, typically slightly later than in the coastal Castelli di Jesi zone due to the higher elevation and cooler temperatures. Fermentation in stainless steel or neutral vessels at controlled temperatures preserves the variety's aromatic character and natural acidity. The Riserva designation requires mandatory aging in oak barrels and significant bottle aging before release. Producers in Matelica tend to use larger oak casks rather than small barriques to add complexity without overwhelming the mineral and aromatic character of Verdicchio. Extended lees contact is also practiced by quality producers to add texture and yeast-derived complexity. The combination of wood and lees aging produces wines of notable depth and structure.

Organoleptic Characteristics

Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva presents a golden-yellow color with greenish reflections in youth, deepening to full gold with age. The aromatic profile reflects the continental mountain climate: white peach, citrus, green apple, fennel, anise, mineral flint, white flowers, and almond, with a more pronounced savory, earthy mineral character than Castelli di Jesi. With oak aging, additional vanilla, honey, toasted almond, and oxidative notes emerge. On the palate, Matelica Riserva is dry, full-bodied, and powerfully structured with very high natural acidity that provides exceptional freshness and aging potential. The finish is long, complex, and persistently mineral with the characteristic bitter almond note of Verdicchio. Great examples age magnificently for 10 to 20 years.

Geographical Information

Matelica occupies a unique geographical position: an inland valley completely surrounded by the Apennine mountains, creating a natural amphitheater that traps cold air at night and creates a highly continental climate quite different from the more maritime Castelli di Jesi zone. The valley sits at an average elevation of approximately 350 meters, with vineyard sites extending to 700 meters or more. Soils in the Matelica valley are predominantly calcareous clay with significant limestone content, providing excellent drainage and mineral richness. The strong diurnal temperature variation (differences of 20 degrees Celsius or more between day and night temperatures during summer) is the key to the high natural acidity and aromatic complexity of Matelica Verdicchio. Limited spring rainfall and dry summers concentrate flavors.

Regulations

Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva DOCG regulations require a minimum of 85 percent Verdicchio. Mandatory aging before release includes at least 18 months total, with a minimum of 6 months in oak barrels and at least 6 months in bottle. Maximum yields are controlled to ensure concentration. Minimum alcohol content is 12.5 percent. All wines must undergo organoleptic and analytical evaluation before DOCG certification. Wines must be bottled within the production zone. The denomination is overseen by the Istituto Marchigiano di Tutela Vini (IMT), which manages multiple Marche appellations. The Matelica Riserva DOCG benefits from the advocacy of a small group of dedicated producers who have worked to establish the distinctive reputation of Matelica Verdicchio as a benchmark Italian white wine of great aging potential.
