Rosazzo DOCG

Wine Denomination from Friuli Venezia Giulia

Introduction

Rosazzo is a DOCG denomination from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, recognized in 2011, covering a prestigious white wine blend produced in a small zone in the Colli Orientali del Friuli area of the province of Udine. The denomination is centered on the historic Abbazia di Rosazzo, an ancient Benedictine abbey whose monks cultivated vines on these hills for centuries. Rosazzo DOCG is a white blend based on Friulano (formerly Tocai Friulano) with the addition of other authorized Friulian and international varieties. The wine represents a refined, complex expression of the white winemaking tradition of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, combining the native Friulano character with complementary varieties to produce wines of notable depth, structure, and aging potential.

Production Area

The Rosazzo DOCG production zone covers the municipality of Manzano and parts of neighboring municipalities in the Colli Orientali del Friuli area of the province of Udine. The zone is centered on the Rosazzo hill, where the ancient Benedictine abbey stands surrounded by historic vineyards. The production area is small and precisely defined, covering a limited number of hectares on the distinctive flysch soils of the Colli Orientali. Vineyards are planted at elevations between 100 and 300 meters above sea level on the rolling hills of eastern Friuli. The landscape is characterized by the distinctive alternating layers of sandstone and marl (ponca) that are the defining geological feature of the Colli Orientali del Friuli.

Grapes Allowed

Rosazzo DOCG must be produced from Friulano (at least 50 percent), with the remaining percentage composed of permitted white grape varieties including Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malvasia Istriana, and Riesling Renano. The dominance of Friulano ensures the wine retains the characteristic local identity: the variety's herbal, bitter almond, and mineral notes are the soul of the Rosazzo blend. The supporting varieties add aromatic complexity, body, and aromatic nuance. The specific combination chosen by each producer varies, creating a range of interpretations of the Rosazzo style, from those emphasizing native varieties to blends incorporating international grapes.

Production Techniques

White grapes for Rosazzo are harvested in September and early October, with timing adjusted for each variety according to its ripening profile. Winemaking practices in the zone range from modern and minimalist, emphasizing fresh, clean aromatic expression through stainless steel fermentation and bottling, to more traditional and oxidative approaches using large oak casks and extended lees contact. Some producers practice extended maceration on the skins (orange wine style) to extract more phenolic compounds from the white grapes. Oak aging of varying duration is employed by different producers to add complexity and structure. All styles must reflect the distinctive character of the Friulano variety and the Rosazzo terroir.

Organoleptic Characteristics

Rosazzo DOCG presents a straw-yellow to golden color, sometimes with greenish reflections in youth. The aromatic profile is complex and distinctive, reflecting both the Friulano variety and the supporting varieties: white flowers, almonds, citrus, peach, fresh herbs, a characteristic slightly bitter, mineral note from Friulano, and possible wood-influenced vanilla and toasty notes in aged versions. On the palate, the wine is dry, medium to full-bodied, with moderate acidity, good structure, and a characteristic dry, slightly bitter finish typical of Friulano-based blends. Wines from the best producers in the finest vintages can achieve great complexity and show well after 5 to 10 years of bottle aging. The Abbazia di Rosazzo produces benchmark wines from this zone.

Geographical Information

The Rosazzo area sits in the heart of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, the eastern hills of Friuli that border Slovenia. The defining soil type is ponca, the local name for the characteristic alternating layers of sandstone and marl (flysch) that characterize the Colli Orientali and the neighboring Slovenian Brda zone. These soils provide good drainage, mineral richness, and a distinctive terroir character evident in the wines. The continental climate of Friuli, tempered by the Alps and the Adriatic, provides warm summers for full grape ripeness while cool autumns preserve natural acidity. The proximity to Slovenia and the Adriatic provides moderate humidity beneficial for vine health. The historic Benedictine abbey of Rosazzo, founded in the 11th century, is a cultural landmark of the zone.

Regulations

Rosazzo DOCG regulations require a minimum of 50 percent Friulano, with other authorized white varieties permitted for the remainder. Maximum yields are controlled to ensure quality. Minimum alcohol content and other analytical parameters are specified. All wines must undergo organoleptic and analytical testing before DOCG certification. The wine must be bottled within the production zone. A Riserva designation may be available with additional aging requirements. The denomination falls within the broader Colli Orientali del Friuli regulatory framework and is overseen by regional authorities in collaboration with the local producers consortium. The historic connection to the Abbazia di Rosazzo provides the denomination with a strong cultural identity that distinguishes it from neighboring wine zones.
